1 Night Devils Marbles & Stars Private Tour - PhotographyTours.com.au

Travel in comfort through the vivid colours of the outback as we head north of Alice Springs. Travelling through the MacDonnell Ranges and past the Tanami Desert, this private tour visits cultural and historic sites to Central Australia. The Devils Marbles (Karlu Karlu) are one of Australia’s geological wonders, situated in a wide and shallow desert valley. Take the time to wander between these ancient boulders. You’ll be set up with a sunset platter for an amazing sunset over the valley. Stay a while and watch the stars appear in the cool clear air before we head back to a truly Australian outback hotel for dinner and our overnight stay.

Day 1.

Departing Alice Springs at midday we travel up the north Stuart Highway to our first stop of Native Gap. The Reserve area is of great importance to Aboriginal people. It is a registered sacred site and the intersection of several dreaming trails. The Aboriginal name for the place is Arulta Atwarte (pronounced ar-all-ta art-wa-cha) which means “back of the shoulder – gap” (as the ridge of the Hann Range appears when seen from the south). Have some time to climb the range looking out over the Tanami Desert.

We travel another 20 mins to Aileron for a look through the roadhouse that is home to the striking giant figure of the ‘Anmatjere Man’ or “Big Man”. Erected in December 2005, at 17 metre tall and weighing 8 tonne, he strikes an impressive figure as he overlooks Aileron and the surrounding region.

Passing Central Mt Stuart, this is the approximate geographical centre of Australia. Stuart initially named it Central Mount Sturt after his companion explorer Charles Sturt, whose expedition he was part of in 1844. Later it became known as Central Mount Stuart on John McDouall Stuart’s return to Adelaide. Take a look at the cairn at the reserve, which was constructed in 1960 to commemorate the centenary of Stuart’s expedition. Stuart’s success in paving a route through the centre of Australia enabled the construction of the Overland Telegraph.

We check into the Devils Marbles Hotel for a drink. This historic pub dates back to the 1930s, when Wolfram was mined nearby. A freshen up and we head out to the striking Devils Marbles for the afternoon and sunset over the Barkly Tablelands.

I share my knowledge with you bout the ancient Aboriginal mythology and fascinating of surrounding this geological marvel on a short walks around the reserve.

Sit back in a serene location and watch the soft afternoon colours dance over the marbles as the sun sets. We head back to the Devils Marbles Hotel for a true NT pub dinner and some stargazing.

Day 2.

An early start sees us heading back into the park for a seat to witness hands down the most amazing sunrise in Central Australia.

We head back t the hotel for breakfast and coffee before we head down the road to Barrow Creek.Barrow Creek was chosen as a site for an Overland Telegraph morse repeater station by John Ross in September 1871. The station was officially opened on 16 August 1872 by Charles Todd. It was one of 15 such repeater stations on a network traversing Australia and linking to Europe, providing essential communication services. A manned repeater station in newer buildings remained in operation until at least the 1970s. There was also a post office and telephone exchange servicing local cattle stations. The original Telegraph Station has been preserved and is now a monument to the troubles which beset the early days of the Territory. Barrow Creek has recently become famous for being the closest town to the location of where Peter Falconio was murdered by Bradley John Murdoch, and Joanne Lees was abducted. The scene of the crime was 13 kilometres to the north of Barrow Creek. Arrival bac to Alice by mid afternoon.
